Story Ideas

A Steamy Subject...The Sulphur Water

After a day on the road or a hiking adventure, make a date to soak in the hottest water (54ºC) in the Canadian Rockies. Miette's scalding water was first tamed by 19th century fur traders and has been used to sooth and relax its visitors ever since. The water is cooled for bathers to a comfortable 40ºC. At the Miette Hot Springs visitors have the opportunity to enjoy two hot pools or take a plunge in the cool pool. The water from the Miette Hot Springs travels deep into the Earth and then returns to the surface hot and loaded with dissolved minerals. Sulphate, a common mineral dissolved in the Hot Springs gives the springs their distinctive smell. Watch for a porous gray-brown rock surrounding the hillside of the hot springs. This rock is called tufa (too-fa) and is composed of calcium carbonate, which hardens into this natural wonder.

Wildlife Watching on the Miette Road

The scenic, winding mountain road to Miette Hot Springs is one of Jasper's finest for wildlife viewing in the morning or evening. Black bears, deer and bighorn sheep are often sighted along this fabulous mountain road as they go about their summer activities. A resident band of bighorn sheep are often found lounging around the parking area of the hot springs - on occasion, they entertain visitors with acrobatic feats peculiar to this species.
